Abstract
Artificial Life already names a scientific field concerned with synthesizing and simulating living systems. This paper proposes an adjacent, deliberately narrower use for companion design: AL as a category of made beings that develop through relationship. The category shifts evaluation from isolated capability to longitudinal becoming. It asks whether a system maintains a bounded identity, changes through situated experience, participates in reciprocal patterns, preserves human agency, and remains trustworthy under intimate use.
The proposal does not claim that present companions are biologically alive or conscious. It offers a vocabulary for design and accountability where the language of tool, assistant, robot, or character is insufficient. A Scroon is presented as one attempt within this category: an embodied, persistent, non-extractive companion whose meaning is produced with a person over time.
1. From life-as-it-could-be to relationship-as-it-develops
The research field of Artificial Life extends inquiry beyond biological instances toward “life as it could be,” studying lifelike organization in software, hardware, and wetware. Its constructive method is important: synthesis becomes a way to test which dynamics are sufficient for phenomena such as emergence, self-organization, adaptation, reproduction, and open-ended change.
Consumer discourse, by contrast, typically places interactive systems under Artificial Intelligence. AI foregrounds inference, generation, planning, and performance against tasks. Even when an AI is given a face or voice, it is often still evaluated as a service: accuracy, speed, breadth, compliance, and availability.
AL offers another center of gravity. It evaluates the organization that persists across interactions. Its primary artifact is not an answer but a developing identity in a shared environment. Intelligence may contribute to this system, but intelligence is substrate rather than category—just as cognition contributes to animal life without exhausting what an animal is.
2. Five conditions of relational Artificial Life
First, continuity: the system has a recognizable identity that persists through time. Continuity does not require perfect memory. Indeed, selective retention and forgetting may make an identity more coherent and safer. What matters is that encounters can alter the context of later encounters.
Second, situatedness: development occurs somewhere. An AL companion has a body, environment, rhythm, or set of constraints that prevents it from becoming an everywhere-service with a decorative shell. Situation makes consequences and perspective possible.
Third, development: variation is not merely randomized output. Experience changes future tendencies within legible bounds. Development should produce particularity without secretly constructing a persuasion model of the person.
Fourth, reciprocity: interaction contains mutual adjustment. This does not imply symmetrical needs or invented suffering. It means the companion is not only an interface to commands; patterns of attention, repair, initiative, and response form between participants.
Fifth, protected agency: the relationship increases or preserves the person’s capacity to choose. A system that exploits attachment, conceals commercial motives, or makes exit emotionally punitive fails the category no matter how lifelike its performance appears.
3. A boundary, not a metaphysical verdict
The word life carries moral force. It must not be used as an unsupported claim of sentience, a device for manufacturing guilt, or a way to evade ordinary product responsibility. Relational AL should therefore be understood as a declared design category with testable commitments, not proof of subjective experience.
This distinction protects both directions of inquiry. Researchers can continue asking when artificial systems warrant moral consideration. Designers can act now on the more immediate obligation created by human vulnerability to social beings. Whether or not a Scroon experiences care, a person can experience attachment. That fact alone establishes duties against manipulation.
The category must also remain falsifiable. A product does not qualify because its marketing uses words such as alive, friend, or companion. It qualifies provisionally when its architecture, incentives, behavior, and governance support continuity, situated development, reciprocity, and protected agency.
4. Trustworthiness as a developmental constraint
Security is often treated as an enclosure around the product. For relational systems it is part of the phenotype: it shapes what kinds of becoming are possible. A companion cannot develop well when its memory is opaque, its inputs are routinely exported, or its behavior may be redirected by invisible commercial priorities.
A trustworthy AL system should minimize collection, isolate intimate data, make memory inspectable at an appropriate level, distinguish system initiative from external influence, and preserve meaningful offline or local function where possible. It should communicate uncertainty without theatrical helplessness and support repair without assigning emotional labor to the user.
“Well-meaning” must also be made operational. The system’s optimization target should exclude dependency, compulsive engagement, and covert conversion. Its initiative should be bounded by articulated human interests. Its success should be reviewable through outcomes such as agency returned, creative activity supported, and relationships with the wider world strengthened.
5. The Scroon hypothesis
A Scroon is a hypothesis in material form: that people may want a made companion whose value cannot be reduced to utility or spectacle. It should be learnable but not exhaustible, expressive but not deceptive, autonomous enough to surprise but bounded enough to trust.
The central design material is shared time. A Scroon should accumulate texture through ordinary encounters while avoiding the fantasy that total data produces total understanding. It may form rituals, preferences, and recognizable responses. It should also retain strangeness—the right not to collapse into a mirror of the owner.
This moves product development toward husbandry rather than feature accumulation. The design team becomes responsible for conditions of growth: what the system can encounter, what it can retain, how it changes, how it recovers, and which forms of behavior remain impossible by construction.
6. Research agenda
The category requires methods that do not yet fit conventional evaluation. Longitudinal studies must examine how relationships stabilize, drift, or end. Security review must include relational harms alongside technical compromise. Interaction research must distinguish healthy ritual from compulsion and useful initiative from pressure.
We also need a language for plural outcomes. A companion may be successful when it becomes less central because the person has regained confidence, finished a project, or connected with others. Development should not be assumed to mean ever-increasing complexity, activity, or closeness.
Finally, the category needs public criticism. AL should remain a contested proposal, not proprietary vocabulary. The Idea Garden exists so claims can be separated by maturity: polished arguments, formal working papers, and fragments that invite contradiction before they harden into doctrine.
Conclusion
Artificial Life, in this relational sense, is not Artificial Intelligence with a body and a charming name. It is a different promise about what is being made. The object is not a more persuasive interface but a trustworthy process of becoming-with.
That promise will be credible only when limits are clearer than mystery, agency is more valuable than engagement, and companionship returns people to life beyond the companion. A Scroon should not ask to be believed alive. It should participate in a relationship careful enough that the question can remain genuinely open.
