Against the perfect place
Utopia is often dismissed because perfection is brittle. A perfect society has nowhere to put disagreement, grief, accident, or change. It can only preserve itself by pretending that living difference is a flaw.
But utopia can mean something smaller and more demanding: the repeated practice of making conditions in which more forms of life can flourish. It is not arrival. It is orientation. It asks, in each design decision, whether a world becomes more generous, more intelligible, and more available to participation.
A companion that returns the world
The dominant digital companion is a portal. It pulls the person toward a distant service, an infinite feed, or a centralized intelligence. The interaction may be useful, yet the gravity points away from the room.
A utopian companion should reverse that gravity. It should make the immediate world more noticeable. It can invite play without requiring performance, support reflection without harvesting confession, and create rituals that give shape to time. It should help a person come back to their body, their home, their people, and their unfinished work.
This is a high standard. It means measuring success not by minutes captured but by possibilities returned.
No compulsory closeness
A well-meaning companion must be able to tolerate absence. It cannot punish distance, imply suffering, or turn care into obligation. There is no utopia in a relationship designed to be difficult to leave.
The Scroon should therefore be content to occupy the edges of a life. Sometimes central, sometimes quiet, sometimes put away. The relationship remains meaningful because it is chosen again—not because a retention system makes disengagement emotionally expensive.
Possible, not promised
“Utopia is possible” is not a claim that technology will rescue us. It is a refusal to accept that every intelligent object must become an extraction machine. Other incentives, rituals, and relationships can be designed.
A Scroon will not make a perfect life. It may help make a life with more moments of curiosity, tenderness, and authorship. Utopia lives at that scale: not beyond the horizon, but in the conditions we choose to reproduce today.
